To our delight the news is all four partners have been approved! The project's aim is to facilitate collaborative green mapping within and between the four partners. We will use the Open Green Map system which interactively charts natural, cultural and green living sites.

This is a transnational project between four river cities: Bristol (UK), Berlin (Germany), Budapest (Hungary) and Bistrita (Romania). The project will set in motion a collaborative, green map-making process within and between these four European partners. This will involve the creation of online and possibly paper maps charting local resources for more sustainable living. These thematic maps will use the internationally standardized Green Map System (GMS) of icons.

Participants will have the opportunity to gain new ICT skills and learn more about sustainability issues locally and internationally. They will exchange experiences and learn about other European communities on Study Visits. This will be achieved through a participatory process that is creative, enjoyable and enhances confidence. The process may include storytelling, photography and film-making through group and public events.

Outputs and Products will include a Study Visit to each Partner, a shared website, four local green maps, documentary film (online/DVD) and a European Green Mapping Guide. Target Groups will include those from disadvantaged and under-represented sectors including older people and those without basic qualifications.

We will be welcoming participants from all three partner cities to an event in Bristol this October. We will be working with Knowle West Media Centre as our local partner in this project.

Preparatory Visit in Bistrita, Transylvania

GreenBristol goes to Romania This was to discuss the possibility of launching a European greenmapping collaboration with Berlin and Bistrita, Romania. Pit took Ivor and Steve on a whirlwind tour of the city taking in many fascinating nooks and crannies including a cafe offering free roast wild boar and beer! Steve's friends Mark and Christina were kind enough to provide accommodation, bicycle and more sightseeing during the trip.

Steve and Pit visited Dr Renata Eras of European Project Management, Neukölln. Renata is enthusiastic about the possibility of a collaboration and was very helpful in suggesting the first steps to take. Briefly these are for us to convene a preliminary conference in Bistrita in the Transylvanian mountains of Romania with Ciprian Samoila in January. The likely participants would be adult/lifelong learning groups who could use ICT to benefit their respective communities' environment.

We should submit a formal funding application with at least the three cities as participants - preferably two more to make up a five city project. This to be submitted before the deadline in March 2009. Consideration by the relevant EU Commissioners could take two or three months. Then we could get approval for the project assuming a suitable legal body (preferably in Bristol) could take charge of administration. Steve is approaching Knowle West Media Centre and Bristol Council to discuss possible support.

We are now featured on Open Green Maps.

Evaluation of printed map

GreenBristol was awarded funding recently from the DAFT panel at Community at Heart to commission an independant evaluation of its printed map. This is a United Nations initiative and the theme this year was the melting of the ice caps. The Green Movement performed again to much curiosity. We invited children from Hannah More environmental school - its just around the corner. We had previously chalked an outline of the earth with the Chalk Revolution. The children were invited to fill in the continents and we gave them stencils of the Green Map System icons to brighten up the plaza. Thanks to the Sustainable City team at Bristol City Council for its generous support. Photos are online and we hope to have a movie made by students of City of Bristol College up shortly. We also now have a MySpace set up with some videos to watch.

The Green Movement at Bristol Festival of Nature

A performance at Bristol Festival of Nature on 2nd June 2007. GreenBristol recently printed a map of Lawrence Hill in East Bristol. We will meet Keith Reay of the Chemistry Set on Thursday. Keith and others are interested in mapping Easton.

We hope that, together with Bristol Wireless, we can use Google maps and open layers to produce a multi-layered map of the whole city. Users will be able to upload their own multi-media content (eg photos/movies/audio) to any point on the map. Bristol's entry - Connecting Bristol - was highly praised by the judges. This was inevitably a disappointment but local stake holders and supporters, known as the Momentum group, met the day after the announcement to discuss the future. GreenBristol's work is a showcase model for Connecting Bristol and Steve attended on its behalf. Sixty people were there and agreed that, despite this set-back, the group will press on with the basic thrust outlined in the original bid. Of course time-frames and the scale of developments will be affected. But an unexpected bonus was announced at the ceremony in London; £2 million is to be distributed between all nine runners-up. This funding, whilst modest, will assist Bristol in promoting and liaising between the many diverse projects contained in the original bid.

Green Awards revisited

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_NJV7ds6gX0A/RgqFla2QrrI/AAAAAAAAAA8/s1iO9go3v_s/s400/Green+Awards.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5046993210330623666" />
Sadly GreenBristol didn't win at last year's Green Awards. All will be revealed this December!

(2nd May '06) Avon Organics

Ivor gave a talk to Avon Organic Group on green mapping.

(Sep '05) GB at the Cube cinema

GreenBristol showed an excerpt from a film at the Cube's Greenscreen. Wendy Brawer

Project website: www.greenbristol.org.uk

GreenBristol aims to promote environmental awareness and community sustainability within Bristol by means of green mapping. Green mapping began in the early 1990s. Since then many projects have sprung up around the globe. A common element is the Green Map System - a visual language of green map icons.

Green mapping is an exciting tool for raising awareness around sustainable development. The diversity of projects around the world proves its versatility. It has been used to publicise the green economy, to highlight recycling opportunities, to foster networking, to chart renewable energy and energy efficiency options, to promote urban and wildlife tourism and outdoor recreation and as a tool in youth and adult education.

The GreenBristol project is being piloted in the Bristol New Deal for Communities area. This area covers Barton Hill, The Dings, Lawrence Hill and Redfield.

The centrepiece of the Pilot Project is an online map. This has three functions, relating roughly to past, present and future:

1 To create a forum in which local people can explore and discover the human, natural and environmental history of their locality; and so appreciate and value the distinctiveness of their living neighbourhood

2 To serve as a hub for local people to air their thoughts, feelings and concerns about the place where they live

3 To begin to imagine – and bring about - a city of the future

Local people are invited to contribute content in the form of text, image, audio and video. The project also encourages the making of creative content – poetry, photography, digital stories etc - as well as factual content.

Mapmaking is supported by public events - sociable and enjoyable events open to all. These are occasions to bring together experts and local people - experts in their own neighbourhood. They are a chance to explore and discover the local environment. Finally, public events are opportunities to create media assetts for the website involving the local community in a proactive way.

GreenBristol featured on Electric December!

See GreenBristol's present for you on Electric December (see 14th): www.electricdecember.org

Interviews recorded by Grassroots newspaper about the tree cutting issue

Go here: http://www.greenbristol.org.uk/gms/map_browser.pl?x=513&y=429&z=2 and click on the audio files. The event was to introduce the local environment to residents of the NDC area and invite discussion on topics of interest. Speakers included Ivor McGillivray on Chemicals at the Netham, Robin Acton-Campbell on Trooper's Hill and Tanya Darch (Environmental Quality team, Bristol City Council) on the water quality of the Feeder and river Avon.

Photographer Liz Milner presented the photo competition winner, Mitchel Solars, with a Canon digital camera. Liz commented on the high standard of entries to the competition. Mitchel's photos, and those of other entrants, will be on the online map when it goes live and in an exhibition at Barton Hill Settlement next week. Several poets gave readings including Pippin Sadler, Jon Wisbey, Mark Adams, Sean, Helen Sheppard, and Editor of Venue magazine; Tom Philips. We were also enchanted by the melodies of Whalebone Polly singing their hearts out!

Whalebonepolly

Steve

Food mapping

The Sustainable City team have mapped food links across the city. I think this must be due to the concentration of our manufacturing industry in that district, and the want of open spaces to dilute the irritating fumes unavoidably connected with certain manufactures.

David Davies

During quarter ending December 28th 1878:

Deaths from diseases of the Respiratory Organs reach the large number of 482 i.e. 386 of Bronchitis, Pneumonia, and Pleurisy; and 96 of Phthisis. These 482 deaths give a general rate of mortality of 9.4, but in Clifton the rate is only 5.8; and in the Westbury Sub-registration District (geographically a part of Clifton) only 5.1, although many invalids, subject to Diseases of the Chest, reside in those districts. It thus seems that the inhabitants on the higher levels of the city are not inordinately subject to suffering from the accession of inclement weather. It is clear that persons living in the Clifton and Westbury Districts have better chances of life than their fellow citizens in the lower districts.

Joseph Yeates

Boat trip on Tower Belle - 6th July

Greenbristol have booked the Tower Belle to sail along the Feeder canal and river Avon to Chequers on Wednesday 6th July. The boat starts at Temple Quay at 5.30 returning to the Ostrich pub in Bristol at 10 pm. Information packs about the route and things to look out for (eg kingfishers, herons, glow worms, bats, fish, strange plants, industrial archeology etc) will be provided. Bring your cameras/videos/sketchbooks - we want to collect as many pictures for the website as possible. This event is to invite people to learn more about their immediate environment, its history and ecology and the huge changes the area has undergone. Feedback will provide a rich mixture of unique, individual points of view shared via the green map.

There will be speakers talking about the history and ecology of the route along the way eg The Netham Chemical Works, Lead Works, Crew's Hole Tar Works, invasive plants. We hope also to take samples of the canal and river and project a live display from a microscope showing the bugs and organisms that inhabit the water. There will also be a live band/poetry! To find out the address right click on the photo and save its address. Then, in this blog, add a post. In the preview area click the 'Upload Image/File' button when composing your posting. Since then over 200 green maps have been published around the world in both printed form and digital form. Many of these maps have an urban focus. These maps show sites of environmental significance: provision of green goods and services; availability of open space; toxic hot-spots; and so on. They make use of a broadly recognised set of map icons called the Green Map System developed by a team of eco-designers led by Wendy Brauwer from New York. Green mapping has the potential to facilitate the spread of innovative greening ideas from place to place.

GreenBristol aims to set in motion a green mapping process in Bristol. The project is being piloted in the Bristol New Deal for Communities area: Barton Hill, Redfield, Lawrence Hill, The Dings. Community at Heart awarded funding to the project in February 2004. It is hoped that the idea will catch on in other neighbourhoods of Bristol too.
